Ioannis Kapodistrias was the Foreign Affairs Minister of Russia after the Napoleonic wars, later on, the founder of Switzerland tasked with the duty of drafting its constitution and appointed by the Provisional Hellenic Revolutionary Constitutional Assembly as the Governor of Greece. He arrives at a devasted, still at war with the Ottomans, country to institute a sovereign state, an immensely difficult task.
Kapodistrias had a novel view for a more democratic, peaceful and moral Europe. His views shape Swiss’s first constitution. Rightfully so Henry Kissinger praises him as the moral and idealistic one among the founders of post-Napoleonic Europe.
Kapodistrias opposed many instituted micro interests in newly liberated Greece to create a self-sustainable state and paid the ultimate price. Low and behold what he did not manage to change still plagues modern Greek society.
